Hot off the heels of his new and successful singles “Sweet Baby” and “Unlimited”, Mere Notilde presents his new album, “Now That I Have You”.
Mere Notilde is a Boston-based artist responsible for some of the freshest sample-based sounds in recent times. Tracks such as “Boris” (featured on Majestic Casual’s “music to drive to at night” compilation alongside tracks from Jacques Greene and RAC) and “Our Melody” together accumulated over 100,000 plays on Spotify alone.
With clear influences from the likes of Ed Banger artists such as SebastiAn and Justice, Mere Notilde channels his years of production experience to create something very magical. “Now That I Have You” is an allegory of Mere’s progress as an electronic musician, and he shows no sign of stopping.
The album opens with the title track, featuring heavenly guitar licks from Tyler Keller. The track eases the listener onto the album with ambient synths, soothing strings, and clockwork drums. Mere’s supreme production and Keller’s virtuosic guitar work harmonize into a musical ensemble and foreshadow what's to come.
“Sweet Baby” was first released by UK-based label Savona, and has since racked up over 150,000+ plays on Spotify. The track pushes the listener out into the disco and refreshes vintage sounds with modern house drums and overdriven synths. Expect infectious sampling and catchy vocals you can hop along to, wherever.
“Unlimited” has endless replay value. You’ll find yourself wanting to play this song over and over again, simply because of its stunning production: explosive sample work, punchy drums, and French House filters. The addition of soulful vocals over spacey, hypnotizing synths is the cherry on top.
Rounding out the trio of dance floor singles is “Mono”, Mere’s newest single. As the title suggests, it starts off entirely in Mono, then fanfares into Stereo with four-on-the-floor drums and synth bass. Finely chopped guitar samples decorate the track as Mere cements himself as one of the most creative producers in the scene at the moment.
“Break” provides a break from the dance floor and delves into a more delicate soundscape, without straying from Mere’s sample-based roots. Gentle acoustic guitar, bells, and beepy synths provide a perfect backdrop to lose yourself in imagination - all while a steady kick drum marches the song forward. The track’s arrangement is almost cinematic, and wouldn’t sound out of place in a movie score.
“Cool Song”, first released on Nightfall Collective’s “Nocturnal” compilation, returns the listener to the dance floor for the last time. The track features funky rhythm guitar and rapid-fire vocal chops, all ornamented with saxophones, sleigh bells, and shakers. Melancholy synths close out the track, providing a sense of sophistication - a coolness - to the track. The title certainly doesn’t lie.
“Soldissimo” references French House veteran Etienne de Crécy’s track of the same name, and Mere might just have made its spiritual successor. The track is dreamlike, not unlike The Avalanches’ nostalgic soundscapes: lush chords, vocals, and strings all looping in a trancelike rhythm. The grand finale ramps up the track to fire on all cylinders with soaring strings, proving Mere’s talent on crafting dancey yet cinematic set pieces.
“Now That I Have You” is out on streaming platforms on 2/3/2021. Cassette tapes of the album out on 2/5/2021.
